Why Maintenance Matters: Choosing a Well-Kept Self-Storage Facility | Morningstar Storage

When you’re looking for a storage unit, it’s easy to focus on things like price and location. And don’t get us wrong: those are very important factors to consider when making your decision!

But there’s another factor that’s just as important: maintenance. A well-maintained storage facility doesn’t just look good on the outside — it helps protect your stuff, keeps everything safe and secure, and simultaneously gives you peace of mind.

Let’s dive into why a well-maintained storage space matters and what to look for when making this all-important decision.

Will Keep Your Belongings Safe from Wear and Tear & Damage

If you’re spending the time and money on a place to store your extra items, it’s only safe to assume that the last thing you’d want to do is find your belongings damaged by something preventable, like a leak, pest outbreak or uncontrolled temperatures. After all, you’d just use your moldy basement or humid attic to store things if their safety didn’t matter to you!

A facility that is on top of its maintenance plan will consistently check for things like roof leaks, pests, and problems with its temperature control systems. This means your items — whether they are furniture, clothes, or important documents — stay in the same condition you left them in no matter the time of year.

Will Offer Upgraded Security Features

Security is crucial, but even the best security systems still need regular upkeep. A well-maintained storage facility will have working locks, cameras, gates, and lighting to keep your unit as safe as possible.

It’ll be easy to tell if a storage space feels safe when you visit it for the first time. Go with your gut feeling because if a facility isn’t maintained regularly, broken locks or dead security cameras can make it easier for theft or vandalism to happen when you’re not around!

Will Keep Things Clean & Organized

No one likes a dirty, grimy space — especially when it’s holding your belongings. A clean facility is a good sign that the management team will take care of the place and treat your unit and items as an extension of its facility. Any self-storage space that takes pride in ensuring its entire campus is clean and organized is a great sign.

Plus, regular cleaning and pest control keep dust, mold, and critters from making a home in your unit and damaging your items down the road!

Will Feel Safe When You Visit

A poorly maintained facility can be dangerous beyond its lack of security measures. Things like broken floors, flickering lights, or malfunctioning doors can easily cause accidents. Don’t risk it. Instead, be sure to look for a storage site that takes its preventative maintenance routine seriously so you face fewer hazards and can always access your unit safely and without issue. Plus, you know a well-maintained storage facility is going to take any concerns that pop up seriously and address your needs in a timely fashion.

Always Offers Reliable Access

If a facility is falling apart, it’s a sign of how they treat customers. Maintenance is more than just keeping things from breaking — it’s all about things running smoothly, so you can always count on having easy access to your unit whenever you need it. A well-maintained space shows that the management team is invested in providing good service and values your trust.

Provides Long-Term Peace of Mind

When you pick a storage facility that stays on top of maintenance, you’re making sure your stuff is in good hands for the long haul. Whether it’s holiday decorations or valuable family heirlooms, you want to know they’re safe and sound while in storage. There’s no sense in storing your valuables in a place where you feel uneasy or unsure of their safety and security measures.

Top Things to Look for in a Well-Maintained Self-Storage Facility

When it comes to selecting the right self-storage facility to be your home away from home, there are a few important things beyond maintenance you’ll need to consider. Here are some questions to ask before you commit!

Regular Checks: Facilities that inspect their property often are more likely to catch issues like leaks or broken equipment before they become a problem.

Pest Control: Ask if they have pest control measures. Pests can be a big problem for your belongings if the facility doesn’t stay on top of it.

Climate Control: Ask if the units provide climate control to avoid extreme temperatures and humidity, which can be detrimental to your items’ safety.

Security System Maintenance: Make sure they keep their cameras, gates, and other security systems working properly.

Clean and Tidy: A quick walk around the facility will tell you a lot. If the grounds and common areas are clean, that’s a good sign the units will be too.

Flexibility: Depending on what you’re looking for, finding a flexible storage solution is going to be important. Whether you need a month-to-month lease or the ability to upgrade your space to something larger when the time comes, be sure you find a place that’s going to work for you in the long-term.

Choosing a well-maintained storage facility isn’t just about keeping things tidy—it’s about protecting your belongings and giving yourself peace of mind no matter what. Next time you’re picking a place to store your furniture, seasonal decor, family heirlooms, recreational vehicles, etc., don’t just think about price and location. Make sure you choose a facility that values maintenance and will keep your items safe and secure for as long as you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I pay? Can I pay online?

We have several ways that you can pay, and they are all FEE FREE! Online, by phone, in- person, or auto-pay. We strongly suggest using the ACH Autopay method. It safely and automatically transfers your payment directly to us for an always on time payment from your checking account on the first of every month. If you wish to pay online, you will need to create an account with the original email you used to reserve your unit, as well as your unit number.
  • Do you prorate in and out?

Absolutely! We do not want you to have to pay for any days in the month that you’re not storing with us! For instance, if you sign your lease on the 11th of the month, your first payment is only for the 11th through the end of the month. On your move-out, we only ask that you give us a 10 day notice and that you vacate no later than the 15th. If you abide by those two easy rules, we will refund you for the entire second half of the month!
  • Do I have to stay a certain amount of time?

At Morningstar you are never locked in to a long term lease. Stay as long or as little as your needs apply. We offer month to month leases with prorating in and out.
  • Do I need Insurance?

If it’s worth storing then it must be worth protecting! We offer low-cost coverage for most of life’s mishaps for as little as 40 cents a day. So, even in the unlikely event that you will ever have a claim, it’s comforting to know that the coverage that we can offer protects your belongings in transit on the way to our facility, and there is never a deductible.
  • Do you require a deposit to hold a unit?

We do not require a deposit to hold a unit for you.
