A Step-by-Step Guide to Renting Your First Storage Unit | Morningstar Storage

The idea of renting a self-storage unit can seem pretty overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. With so many options and steps to consider, it can be hard to even know where to start!

But don’t worry—renting a storage unit doesn’t have to be as complicated as it seems. At Morningstar Storage, we’re committed to making the process as simple and stress-free for you as possible.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through each step of the storage rental process, from assessing your needs to moving out, so you can feel confident and prepared through it all.

Step One: Figure Out Your Storage Needs

Before you start looking for your first storage unit, it’s important to understand what exactly you’ll be storing and how much space you’ll need — at least to start. This step will save you both time and money by helping you choose the right unit size from the start. But don’t worry! If your needs change or expand in the future, you can always reassess when the time comes.

First, evaluate all of your belongings.

Start by making a comprehensive list of the items you plan to store. Ask yourself a few questions like:

  • How often will you need to access certain items?
  • How large or small are these items?
  • Do they need to be stored in containers or will they be freestanding?
  • Do you think your storage needs are going to increase, decrease, or stay the same in the near future?

From there, it’s time to determine the right size unit.

Storage units come in a variety of sizes, from small lockers to large garage-sized spaces. Morningstar Storage’s unit size guide can help you accurately estimate what size unit makes sense for you to start with!

You may also want to consider your storage timeline when configuring what size unit you’re going to need. If you’re only storing items temporarily, you might decide to choose a smaller unit, but for long-term storage, you may want a larger space to accommodate future items.

Step Two: Determine Your Different Self-Storage Options

Now with your specific storage needs in mind, it’s time to find the right facility to house them all safely and securly. But not all storage facilities are created equal, so it’s absolutely essential to do your research on all of your possible options.

Make a list of local, reputable facilities.

You’ll want to look for storage providers with strong reputations, who are known for their exceptional customer service and well-maintained facilities. Ask people you trust for recommendations, and spend some time visiting the facilities for yourself to make sure you feel comfortable with your choice.

Take the time to read customer reviews and testimonials, because they can provide valuable insights into the experiences of others and help you make an informed decision!

You’ll also want to consider what features and amenities are important to you.

  • Do you need to access your unit 24/7?
  • Do you need a climate controlled storage facility to protect your valuable items?
  • How important are state-of-the-art security features like surveillance cameras and gated access?

Step Three: It’s Time to Make a Decision & Set a Timeline

Once you’ve found the perfect storage facility, the next step is to reserve your unit. This is a really important step to make sure the unit you want is available exactly when you need it.

Start the reservation process.

At Morningstar Storage, we want to make reserving your unit as easy as possible. You can reserve it online or in person, and our user-friendly website allows you to browse available units, compare prices, and reserve the one that suits your needs—all in just a few clicks.

Reserving online is not only convenient but also allows you to lock in your rate and secure your unit in advance. This is especially useful during peak moving seasons when demand is high. Plus, at Morningstar, you’re never locked into a long-term lease. With our month-to-month leases and pro-rating on move-ins and outs, you’re able to stay as long or as short as you need!

Morningstar Storage knows how important going with the flow is during a transitional time in life, so we offer these flexible lengths of stay with month-to-month leases, minimal paperwork, and no unexpected expenses to give you all the freedom you might need.

Step Four: Make a Plan for Moving Into Your Unit

Preparation is key to ensuring a smooth move-in day. Proper packing and planning can save you time and prevent damage to your belongings well in advance of your actual move-in date.

Pack and label everything properly – don’t take shortcuts you’ll regret later!

You’ll want to pack your items in sturdy containers or boxes and label each one with its contents. This will make it easier to find things later and ensure they’re stored safely.

Beyond packing up all your things, you’ll also need to plan how you’re getting your items to the storage facility.

Will you need a moving truck, or can you make multiple trips in your vehicle? Morningstar Storage offers you free use of our rental truck for four hours. Our truck is also available to reserve any time you need it, adn you’ll find plenty of on-site dollies and carts to help with the move from the truck to your unit.

Of course, you’ll also want to familiarize yourself with the facility’s move-in procedures. At Morningstar, we strive to make the process as easy as possible, with clear signage and helpful staff always available and happy to assist!

Step Five: Get Prepared on Your Move-In Day

Moving day is finally here! With everything packed and ready, it’s time to move your items into your storage unit.

When you arrive at the facility, you’ll check in with the office or use your access code to enter the premises.

Follow the facility map to your unit. Our wide driveways make it easy to navigate, even with large moving trucks. If you’ve reserved a unit on a higher floor, don’t worry—our elevators and carts make it simple to move in.

Think about how you’re going to organize your storage unit.

  • Place frequently accessed items near the front of the unit and heavier items on the bottom.
  • Use shelves or stack boxes to maximize space.
  • Keep a clear path in the middle of your unit for easy access.
  • Try to push bulky items and furniture further back and out of the way.

Now that your items are safely stored, it’s important to manage your unit efficiently to ensure everything stays organized and accessible.

Be sure to periodically visit your unit to check on your belongings and reorganize if necessary. Keeping an inventory list will help you remember what’s inside and where it’s located for the easiest access.

Morningstar Storage offers flexible access hours so you can retrieve items whenever you need them. Whether it’s seasonal decorations or business inventory, your unit is available when you need it.

And we understand that life happens, and your storage needs might change. If you need to extend your rental or switch to a different unit size, our team is here to assist with flexible options.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How can I pay? Can I pay online?

We have several ways that you can pay, and they are all FEE FREE! Online, by phone, in- person, or auto-pay. We strongly suggest using the ACH Autopay method. It safely and automatically transfers your payment directly to us for an always on time payment from your checking account on the first of every month. If you wish to pay online, you will need to create an account with the original email you used to reserve your unit, as well as your unit number.
  • Do you prorate in and out?

Absolutely! We do not want you to have to pay for any days in the month that you’re not storing with us! For instance, if you sign your lease on the 11th of the month, your first payment is only for the 11th through the end of the month. On your move-out, we only ask that you give us a 10 day notice and that you vacate no later than the 15th. If you abide by those two easy rules, we will refund you for the entire second half of the month!
  • Do I have to stay a certain amount of time?

At Morningstar you are never locked in to a long term lease. Stay as long or as little as your needs apply. We offer month to month leases with prorating in and out.
  • Do I need Insurance?

If it’s worth storing then it must be worth protecting! We offer low-cost coverage for most of life’s mishaps for as little as 40 cents a day. So, even in the unlikely event that you will ever have a claim, it’s comforting to know that the coverage that we can offer protects your belongings in transit on the way to our facility, and there is never a deductible.
  • Do you require a deposit to hold a unit?

We do not require a deposit to hold a unit for you.
